Cause
Although the exact cause of bacterial vaginosis is unclear , the following are considered to disrupt the balance of bacteria in the vagina , increasing your risk of infection :

There is a new sexual partner

Have multiple sexual partners

Lavage

Using intrauterine devices ( IUDs ) may also expose you to risk.

Symptoms
While some women with bacterial vaginosis may show signs of infection , bacterial vaginosis symptoms are often includes a thin milky white with a foul odor (usually more noticeable after intercourse ) vaginal discharge. Some women also experience vaginal itching and/or burning.

Treatments
Because bacterial vaginosis can cause complications (including an increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually transmitted diseases, premature birth and preterm), it is important to treat the infection as soon as possible .

In traditional treatment of bacterial vaginosis, health care providers often prescribe antibiotics (bacteria in the vagina to help restore the health of the balance). In the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, it is important to use (or even all of the symptoms subsided after) all drugs prescribed.

BV Natural Treatment
So far, little is known about the alternative natural treatment of bacterial vaginosis. One of the researches of bacterial vaginosis natural treatment in 2009 suggests that certain probiotics may benefit patients with bacterial vaginosis. In 24 studies involving 4,422 women, researchers found that taking supplements of Lactobacillus probiotics with antibiotics metronidazole appears to increase the effectiveness of metronidazole.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria in the vaginal (and in the digestive tract) which can help to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Thus, the main advantage of natural treatment is to establish these beneficial bacteria.

Question by TheRealestFemale: Bacterial Vaginosis: MATURE Answers PLEASE?
On my last visit to my gyno, I was told I had bacterial vaginosis. He prescibed me some gel called Metronidazole and was directed to inject it inside of me once a day for five days. Fortunately, it cured me in an instant.

Unfortunately, I got it again after having unprotected sex with my boyfriend. So, I injected more of my prescription and it cured me. After another unprotected sexual encounter with him, I got it AGAIN. This cycle continues to go on at least two more times until I had enough. So, me and my boyfriend finally started having protected sex and it never came back.

Can someone please tell me what’s going on? I read online that you CAN only get bacterial vaginosis from another woman and too many sexual partners, not from just one man.

I’m wondering does this have to do with my boyfriend being uncircumsized? I’m probably thinking he doesn’t wash good enough underneath the extra skin causing an accumalation of bacteria in there. Is that possible? Should have my boyfriend tested for anything?

I used a one day treamtent from Monistat. The itching is very mild, my main concern is the swelling is unforcomtable. Could this be yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. I havent noticed any smell and my discharge has really been any different than normal just a little thicker with mild yellowish white tint.

Question by Sweet Boss: How to have a SEX life while having bacterial vaginosis?
Okay. 3 years ago, I had unprotected sex with an older men. Shortly after, my vagina started omitting the foulest smell I’ve ever smelled in my life. It smelled like corroding fish and rotten crabs. I was devastated. Mortified and I cried myself to sleep. After my melodramatics, I went to the doctor and found out, I had BV or Bacterial Vaginosis. If you haven’t educated yourself on this, please do before making asinine presumptions. Any who, since then—I’ve struggled with recurring episodes almost every month. I’ve taken antibiotics, acidopholis and I take apple cider vinegar baths some days. Some months I go odor-free and my sex life isn’t effected. But an old partner of mines whom, we’ve been on again/ off again—recently told me, that he had fallen back from me sexually because he had “noticed” a difference in my scent down there. My first was reaction was feeling CRUSHED. But then I got angry because I was frustrated with this never ending problem. Though I am glad he brought it to my attention, I am embarrassed as this isn’t something I want to keep having to explain to every sexual partner. Women don’t ALWAYS smell like roses down there. He said, it wasn’t an ungodly smell but just different. I wouldn’t have sex if the smell was over-powering, I guess I just wish guys were more sensitive to the fact that women suffer from these kind of infections and it has nothing to do with neglectful hygiene.

Best answer:

Answer by Triple A
you should talk to your doctor- i’ve heard of some women being plagued by that. it could be that spermicide or some other component of sex is throwing your pH levels off. they have a product called repHresh that is a vaginal gel that helps maintain proper pH. Also, has your partner been checked out? You could be passing the bacteria back and forth- I know that can happen with yeast infections not sure with BV. I mean it was really open of him to tell you so it might not hurt to make sure everything is on the up and up with him. Also, you might want to use a non scented feminine wash made specifically for washing that area. Some soaps can throw off your pH making u more susceptible. Also, what type of acidophilus are u taking. I suggest an enteric coated brand like natures way Primadophilus, Also, you may want to microwave your panties to make sure they are not harboring any bacteria or fungi and contributing to the problem. Good luck!

Question by Ms.Gee: Need to know more about Bacterial Vaginosis?
after a few months of thinking that i have possibly caught STD from my lover, I gathered my guts to see a gynecologist, who informed me (mush to my relief) that it was BV.
I am scheduled for a Paps smear next week and she advised me to take some tests (CBC,Urine test etc) to make sure that i didn’t “catch” anything from my now ex-lover.
I always make sure to wash before and after sex and I dont understand why i still got BV. Could it be possible that my partner was the one who “gave” this to me? We had very often especially the first few months when we started it… I just need to understand how I got BV…please enlighten me.
im 26 by the way…

Best answer:

Answer by Use Ur Head!!! DUHHH
What causes bacterial vaginosis?

Researchers have had difficulty determining exactly what causes bacterial vaginosis. At present, it seems to be that a combination of multiple bacteria must be present together for the problem to develop. Bacterial vaginosis typically features a reduction in the number of the normal hydrogen peroxide-producing lactobacilli in the vagina. Simultaneously, there is an increase in concentration of other types of bacteria, especially anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that grow in the absence of oxygen). As a result, the diagnosis and treatment are not as simple as identifying and eradicating a single type of bacteria. Why the bacteria combine to cause the infection is unknown.

Certain factors have been identified that increase the chances of developing bacterial vaginosis. These include multiple or new sexual partners, vaginal douching, and cigarette smoking. However, the role of sexual activity in the development of the condition is not fully understood, and bacterial vaginosis can still develop in women who have not had sexual intercourse.

nothing to worry about.its common in alot of women and not always caught by sex….

Treatment for bacterial vaginosis consists of antibiotics. A few antibiotics are routinely used. Metronidazole (Flagyl) taken by either oral (pill) form or by vaginal metronidazole gel (Metrogel) is an effective treatment. Also available is the vaginal clindamycin cream (Cleocin). The oral metronidazole can cause some minor but unpleasant side effects, but is believed to be the most effective treatment.

I’ve been suffering with chronic bacterial vaginosis since 2006. MetroGel will work for about 3 months and then it comes back. On top of my BV I get regular yeast infections too. This has wreaked havoc on my vaginal area.

Back in 2007 I noticed that whenever I went #2 and wiped that my anal area (not my actual anus) would start itching just like my vaginal area did.

By 2008 the problem increased and to this day I can’t go #2 without having EXTREME discomfort in my anal area. I talked to a nurse about it and she says there are NO creams out there that can help this. The only way I find relief is through taking a hot shower immediately after using the bathroom.

I’ve tried Preporation H and Tucks after wipe. Neither have helped. Having to shower after going #2 is disrupting my life. Is there anyone else out there that suffers from this particular BV related issue? Did you eventually get help from the medical field? I’ve never tested positive for any STDs. Thank you.

Answer by Helpfulhannah
Hello,

We always suggested Balneol cleansing lotion to our patients/customers in the pharmacy, I have used it myself and it works really well. Just put it on a wash cloth or even bathroom tissue and wipe the area after a bowel movement.

I put a link below to the Company website, they even have a free sample offer on there, give it a try I am sure it will help you.

Question by Em: I have thrush, bacterial vaginosis AND a UTI. Help!?
For several weeks I’ve had short bouts of cystitis which were flushed away by drinking several pints of water or using a Cystitis Relief Sachet.

I also started a new relationship 2 months ago and our form of contraception is the Pill (Jasmin) which I start using when we met. I am aware of my partners sexual history and he of mine – we have known each other many years.

I started to notice a soreness after sex in my Vagina which usually went away after a bath and sometimes a very strong odour after sex.

Last week things came to a head when after doing a run, my Cystitis was so painful I went to my Doctor who took a urine sample and a swab. She also prescribed me a 3 day course of Trimethoprim as a temporary measure and said it didn’t look like there was any thrush.

The results came back 5 days later and my GP said that I had a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) that was resistant to Trimethoprim, a lot of Thrush and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). She prescribed me a 5 day course of Cefalexin (250mg 4 times a day), suggested I use a Canesten Pessary and Cream towards the end of my Anti-Biotic Course and also suggested that the BV may be linked to the Thrush and could possible go away on it’s own – but to phone the surgery if it didn’t so they could prescribe me with a further course of Anti Biotics.

It is now 5 days later and my symptoms are not getting any better.

My urethra and pelvis is constantly sore. I have to sit in the bath when I get a particularly bad bout of it to ease the stinging. Additionally, my Vagina is very sore and painful. I used the Canesten yesterday as today is my last day of Anti Biotics and it seems that the Canesten irritates my Urethra opening. I also find that using the external Canesten cream makes me too sore so have avoided it so far.

Additionally, 2 days ago when I was wearing slightly tighter clothes (I’m a musician and have to dress up for gigs), it was agonisingly painful and I had a lot of discharge, until I changed into looser clothes.

I feel like I’m doing as much as I can for this and nothing is getting any better.

I’m:

Drinking lots of Cranberry Juice
Drinking lots of Water
Resting
Wearing large 100% Cotton Briefs and very loose trousers, or nothing at all to get air to the area
Avoiding any scented toiletries
Eating Natural Probiotic Yoghurts
Using a hot water bottle when it is very painful
Not having sex
Avoiding fizzy drinks

The list goes on….

Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m waiting for my GP to phone back again but I’m infuriated with the situation. I feel so uncomfortable and don’t know what to do.

This sounds silly but I feel as though this will never go away!

My entire groin is painfully sore

Question by Miss A.: My IUD string feels rough and different, could certain substances damage it?
When I feel for my IUD string now it feels rough, spiky and thick, not like the normal skinny smooth “fishing line” texture. Me and my partner could both feel it while having sex. I’m not sure if it somehow got tangled? or got damaged by a product i used? I can’t seem to find any info online either about damaged feeling IUD strings. HELP!

Can boric acid or hydrogen peroxide damage IUD Strings?
More info:
I have a copper IUD which was inserted about 2 years ago. Everything has been going great and I frequently check the strings. This summer I have had a bad run in with recurrent yeast infections which i treated and then turned in to recurrent bacterial vaginosis. The antibiotics and all the doctor prescribed drugs work to get rid of the infection quick, but they also kill all the good bacteria, disrupting the vagina, and the infections always come back.

I finally have got my vagina back into order by doing a program that utilized hydrogen peroxide/water douches and inserting acidophilus pills in the vagina (the ones i used also contained boric acid)

Can boric acid or hydrogen peroxide damage IUD Strings?

Best answer:

Answer by Trust me I’m a Doctor ♥
Sorry but I think you are going to have to ask your GP about this, sounds as though you need to be examined so they can see exactly what has happened to the strings, if your partner can feel them during sex then you can’t leave things as they are.
